Abundance vs. Scarcity
|
|
I have chosen this power tool since focusing and practicing this concept has changed my life for the better. This is not to say that I have not or will not, from time to time, go back to my old Scarcity perspectives of life, but only to say that now I am aware of it and can quickly bring myself back to where I want to operate from and that is seeing things from Abundance mentality.
I am truly convinced that focusing on this simple yet profound concept will empower and enable my clients to lead a more content and joyful life; a life where possibilities for growth and happiness are endless.
My belief is that practicing this concept will help people become grateful of what they already have instead of complaining of what is missing in their lives; as well, it invites them to see themselves not separate from others but at one with the entire universe. Fear will become a thing in the past while stepping in the unknown will become an adventurous and rewarding journey that people seek to take part in.
Let’s start with translation of each perspective; Abundance means plenty while Scarcity means shortage. Living from a shortage mentality will bring fear and turmoil where living life knowing that there is plenty for everyone will bring tranquility in our lives..
I trust that to get to live in Abundance mentality, we need to focus on possibilities and our inner perfection, resilience and resourcefulness.
When we are committed to focus only on those qualities, then we become unstuck and able to take forward movement.
This will give us the power and confidence to realistically assess what we want for ourselves and what we currently have that can be great asset for us. As well, we’ll be able to confidently examine what we need to get more of (i.e. skills, knowledge, risk taking, supportive resources) to be able to make our dream into reality. When we no longer are paralyzed by dreadful thoughts of inadequacy, insecurity, mistrust or mediocre, all of a sudden life becomes more peaceful, free and full of possibilities.
On the other hand, when we focus on what is missing in our lives, what skills, talents, contacts or opportunities that we do not have, then we tend to stay where we are as we easily take for granted opportunities that are right in front of us; in another words, we are allowing fear to run our lives. Focus on lacks means that there is no way to attract abundance into our lives since that is just a myth; and only few selected people get to live in the realm of abundance but that does not include people like us!
I read somewhere that opposite of Love is not Hate but it is Fear and that very much resonated with me. I believe that when fear walks through the door, love will exit through another door. If we think about how we sacrifice living a free and content life for the fear of failing or being ridiculed or being wrong, then this concept might resonate with you too.
Here is a quick comparison between operating from the Abundance mentality VS the Scarcity mentality:

Just by looking at the above comparison, won’t you want to choose Abundance? Don’t you feel a sense of comfort and joy rushing through every fiber of your being?
When my clients come to me with all the reasons for why they are where they are now, by using this power tool, I can help them see that they don’t have to stay there any more; and that can be as simple as changing their focus from Scarcity to Abundance! I might ask questions like:
- How is focusing on lacks helping you in this situation?
- How is living out of your current mentality (scarcity) showing up for you in your life?
- How is focusing on inner resourcefulness can create possibilities for you?
- What asset do you have right now that can help get you started?
- What can you learn from this situation?
- How else can you look at this situation?
- What can you be grateful for?
- What would a tranquil life look to you?
- Are you willing to take actions despite of the fear?
- What is the worst thing that can happen to you?
- What is the best thing that can happen to you?
- Imagine you are 90 and looking back at your life, would you have any regrets?
- Can you tell me if you are sacrificing anything right now? If so, what are you sacrificing? How is that showing up for you in your life?
- How would your life look like if you no longer had to sacrifice?
Last but not least, I wanted to leave you with a true story of a girl who was born and raised in a Middle Eastern country until she was 22 years old. When she finally found her way out of her troubled country and started her life somewhere in North America, she had already developed a pessimistic outlook of life. Possibility of leading a content life, full of opportunities and freedom sounded like a Cinderella’s story to her! This girl had no point of reference but all the unjust, inhuman and unfathomable ugliness and fear she experienced so early in life (since she was only 13). Life was a prison sentence for her and while she appeared alive on the outside, inside she was already dead and buried. She felt num, fearful, indifferent, sorrowful, overwhelmed and stuck! It was as if she had lost the ability to believe in a life of choice and possibility for her so she slowly but surely was losing the will to live. The more this girl focused on what is missing in her life; what has gone wrong in her life;
what she cannot do, be or have at the moment, the more blocks kept showing up in her life.
Well this story has a happy ending; short form of the ending goes like this…by chance, one day she was approached by a friend who invited her to accompany him to a talk he was attending. It was then that she was asked to consider the possibility of living in a realm of Abundance. She had nothing to lose but maybe something to gain, so she agreed. She eagerly inundated herself with books, tapes, seminars and talks that suggested she no longer had to live with fear. Through self reflection, coaching, mentoring and reframing, she started to focus on her inner perfection and resourcefulness instead of complaining of what she did not have, what could go wrong or how big the obstacles were! She quickly turned wishful thoughts into real possibilities and today, she is well on her way and on the path of living her long lost dream!!! Today, when set backs occur, she gently reminds herself that her preference is to live in the realm of Abundance; and that alone, gives her the courage to rise quickly each time she
falls.
And last but not least, while being present and grateful for the amazing journey we have all been gifted by, called life, she has learned to celebrate the future which is unfolding before her one day at a time.
